How to Get a Super Smooth Finish

Super-Duper Shine

One of my next projects is to assemble and complete a mandolin kit. As I do so, I want to teach how to get that incredible finish you find on guitars and other stringed instruments – but only using home-shop available products and techniques.

A critical step in getting that glossy finish is using some sort of pore filler to smooth the surface so light bounces off evenly. (Without the pores of the wood being visible as tiny divots.)

In this case I will be using Glu Boost Fill N’ Finish, a CA product that speeds up the pore filling task. Glu Boost is a brand that I have long supported.

I’ll be starting soon on the build, so stay tuned.
